"Steven John" - You would be correct, except we aren't talking about a fortune 500 company that the employees can CHOOSE to work at, or not. We're talking about a PUBLIC library, that many people use to find health information. Sometimes that information isn't considered 'moral' by our politicians, but is still necessary. For instance many women may wish to read about the health effects of breast enlargement. Should those women be required to beg an employee before being given access to any web site with the word breast in it? Should they be required to embarrass, and degrade themselves, or should they just stay ignorant and face the potential health consequences? What about men who wish to read about premature ejaculation, or other erectile dysfunction problems they may be having. Surely the must not be fine, moral , and upstanding citizens if they're having such 'immoral' problems. They can always just go kill themselves, right John? Then there's little Suzy, who just wants to ask the other girls on a 'sex talk' message board if it's normal to have sex with her 28 year old step-father even though she's only 8. I'm sure she'll figure it out all on her own, right john? In short you are obviously a small minded, cold hearted, ignorant fool who has never considered the fact that other people may not always live the same lifestyle as you, and may have different needs than you. If I were you I'd go back to my rich, white, suburb and stick my head right back into the sand I pulled it out of. These things are real. They are not rare. The world is bigger, scarier, and darker than you'll probably ever know John. I'm happy that you're able to remain so ignorant of all the 'naughty' things in life, but please don't let that ignorance hurt other people. Some people aren't given the choice to just ignore the realities of our world. This bill is a joke, and anyone who can't see that probably can't see at all.

Jeez, You have a lot of ignorant Library staff down there in Illinois. I work for a fortune 500 company and we have an Internet filtering software product called Websense. Less than one FTE supports it for over 20,000 users. If your computer support staff can't figure out how to work such a simple software program maybe you ought to start thinking about hiring smarter people instead of your relatives. By the way, I'm an upstanding moral citizen so the filtering software doesn't bother me in the least. I don't look at all smut and filth your patrons would so sorely miss.

Christopher Public Library is participating in the Day of Unity. We are turning off internet access for the day to the public and providing information in regards to HB 1727. This bill would require filters on our computers and we question who will pay for the additional employees that would be necessary to accompany minors on the internet.

I spoke about HB 1727 in recent meetings, informing colleagues about this renewed threat to libraries in Illinois. Today, I sent a detailed email messages to library staff members and college colleagues asking them to contact our Senator with a request to vote not on HB 1727.

I can't believe the tactics taken by some of these library directors and/or their boards. If you have an issue with proposed legislation there are more appropriate ways to communicate your desires than by denying service to your patrons, taxpayers who pay your salaries, benefits, ad nauseum. If I learn my library, to whom I pay taxes, is participating in this type of activity there will be hell to pay; someone's head will roll. At the very least there will be a personnel change.
