Barclay Public Library in Warrensburg, IL will be participating in unity day on May 14, 2007 by downloading demonstration filters on computers and passing out flyers to the public. The flyers will explain what filters do to Internet searching and the financial burden that will be placed upon our library if HB1727 passes. A press release has been sent to local media, including three local news stations. At least four other RPLS libraries will be participating with similar demonstrations.

Indian Trails Public Library now has a page that precedes our home page on the public computers. The page explains our concerns about the filtering bill and lists contact information for local senators and the Senate president. This information is also provided on bookmarks for the public to take away. We will also have two computer (one on each floor) that have demonstration copies of a filter installed. The message on those computers says that the computer is filtered. If you cannot access the site you seek, please ask to be moved to an unfiltered computer. The last line cites the bill which would filter all public computers in the library.

The following letter has been sent to every Illinois Senator: From: Denise Varenhorst, President Family Friendly Libraries www.fflibraries.org (770) 932-9994 Subject: Internet Shutdown planned for May 14th by Librarians Dear Senator, • Librarians across Illinois are planning to SHUT DOWN INTERNET ACCESS AT LOCAL LIBRARIES and distribute political fliers to library patrons on May 14th, 2007. attempt to build opposition to the Internet Filtering Bill 1727, • Participating librarians will be trying to FRIGHTEN TAXPAYERS INTO BELIEVING THAT HB 1727 WILL CAUSE THEM TO LOSE INTERNET ACCESS at their library. Of course, this is completely untrue. • Local libraries are posting their specific protest plan and their own contact information on the Internet, so YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY IS PLANNING AT www.illinoislibraryday.info Click on “Message Board” for complete list of protest plans. • If your local library is planning to use tax dollars to print or distribute fliers, or plans to block Internet access on May 14th, we urge you to contact your local library board and library director and tell them that they cannot do this. • Local librarians have NO RIGHT TO DENY LIBRARY USERS SERVICES they have paid for simply because of the librarians’ political views. • At this time, the message board is still accessible at http://www.illinoislibraryday.info/cgi-bin/unity/unity.cgi but it may be taken down when the protesters realize they are being observed. • For your information, we are attaching, below, the list of protest plans currently available on the website, in case this information is later removed from public access. (text omitted from this message due to length, however, all messages posted on this board were cut and pasted to the e-mail)
